Basement & Interior Drain Tile Systems

Do you have basement leaks or water damage from rain?

Drain tile systems are needed when hydrostatic pressure forces water up through the foundation cove or through cracks that have formed in your home’s concrete floor as a result of this pressure. If you want a clean dry basement, and especially if you are remodeling a finished basement, you want to get a basement waterproofing assessment by a proven foundation specialist. Accu-Dry’s Drain Tile System is the proven solution to relieving this hydrostatic pressure and keeping your basement or crawlspace dry.

What Is A Drain Tile System?

A drain tile system is a type of basement waterproofing drainage system designed to prevent ground or floodwater from flooding a home or crawlspace. There are two types of drain tile systems: interior and exterior. Both types function in much the same way, directing excess groundwater away from your valuable property. The difference, as the names imply, is where the two drain-tile systems are installed. An interior drain tile system is installed within the walls of your home’s basement or crawlspace. In the case of a basement, it will be installed underneath the concrete flooring. An exterior drain tile system is installed around the perimeter of the house.

Although exterior drain tiles are an option, we recommend and specialize in interior. Exterior drain tiles require heavy machinery to excavate all the dirt around the outside of your house to install. Cecause they are exposed to external elements, they can clog up or fail due to soil pressure over time. Interior drain tiles are protected from the elements and come with lifetime transferable warranties.

How Drain Tile Works

A drain tile essentially consists of a pipe that runs around the perimeter of the area being protected. The secret to the drainage ability of the system is that the pipe is porous or perforated. Excess water easily enters the pipe, where it is carried by gravity or through the use of a sump pump away from the home. Typically, the pipes will drain out in the yard a safe distance away from the house. The use of a sump pump is more common in interior drain-style systems than in exterior ones. An exterior system is designed to deflect water from a further distance away and can be designed to use gravity to get the water flowing instead.

Benefits Of A Drain Tile System

A drain tile system is an important part of your home’s waterproofing strategy. Water frequently accumulates around the foundation of unprotected homes, and can enter the basement or crawlspace. Some of the benefits of having a drain tile system in place to prevent this include:

  • Protecting your foundation from water damage
  • Reducing the risk of flooding
  • Preventing mold or other health hazards from excess moisture
  • Reducing the amount of moisture or humidity in the home
  • Increasing the value of the home

What An Install Covers:

Several of the items on that list come with an additional benefit as well: reducing the need for costly repairs. Flooding, foundational damage, and the presence of mold are all expensive problems to repair.

Many crawlspaces and basements without proper drainage will flood or even hold pockets of water after heavy rain. To install proper drainage:

  • A trench must be dug around the perimeter and a 4-inch perforated drain tile (with a filter sock around the tile) should be installed
  • In many cases, washed river stone is poured around the drain tile.
  • The drain tile system is then diverted to a sump pit basin with a covered lid. A 1/2 horsepower sump pump with a check valve and 1″ 1/2 PVC discharge pipe directed to the low area in your yard.

Why Hire a Professional to Install or Repair Your Drain Tile System?

Installing or repairing a drain tile system isn’t a do-it-yourself (‘DIY’) project! If this type of basement waterproofing is done incorrectly, amateur drain-tile work on your home can result in damage to your property and potential injury to you or your family. Without the proper specialized basement waterproofing equipment, these chances only increase. Professionals have the training and tools necessary to do the job right.

Additionally, the basement water issues you’re seeking to resolve could have underlying issues that, if left untreated, will hinder or negate the benefits of the drain tile system. This will cost you more money in additional home repairs once the problem worsens. A professional concrete crawlspace and basement waterproofing expert will be able to identify and remedy these situations as part of the installation or repair.
